Upon Waking

Morning routines set the tone for the day. We can keep it simple and still establish an important anchor for the day. Here’s mine:

  • Before getting up, feel the body, notice what’s there, invite an intention. It can be as simple as ‘I greet each moment of this day as precious’ to something more specific.

  • Take several sips of room temperature or warm water.

  • Scrap the tongue. So much better for you than brushing the tongue!

  • Swish water in the mouth as you rinse your face 7 times with cool water. Release the water and brush teeth.

  • At least once a day, oil pulling to help remove toxins in mouth, throat and body. This is done for 5-10 minutes and is markedly different than using a mouthwash. It is also helpful for supporting whiter teeth; I do not use whiteners. People who ask about this often seem skeptical when the idea of oil pulling is shared; try it for a few weeks and see what you think.

Hair - Nuture It!

So many times I am asked about my hair.

Yes, it is my natural color. Many years ago the coloring was stopped and what a gift of time that has been. It also invited me to accept me more as I am. Then, about five years ago, to my dismay, so much hair was falling out it seems to clog the drain. This lasted for a couple months and then stabilized.

So, what to do? I checked with experts, did research, and eventually began the following natural approach. This is not a quick fix, and takes a few months to see results. It remains my approach.

  • Wash hair every few days; sometimes it is a week or more between washing for me.

  • Prior to washing my hair. I apply this hair oil from Banyan* generously at least 30 minutes, ideally longer, before showering and sometimes overnight.

  • When I’ve the space to do so, I also make a paste out of Shikakai powder and apply to hair 30 minutes or so before washing; this is after the oil has been on my hair for at least 30 minutes.

  • I wash it all out with quality shampoo and conditioner.

  • In addition to the above, daily Healthy Hair supplements are taken. To get this going, I took 2 tablets in the morning and two in the evening. Now I take 1-2 tablets daily.

  • It is rare for me to use a hair dryer or heated applicance on my hair. Instead, after combing the wet hair, I use several clips to twist it all over my head and allow this to dry for a day or so. It looks like this.
